The new "English Curriculum Criterion" issued by pertinent departments highlights the fact that the English courses in compulsory education aim at cultivating the students' interest in English, and helping them establish the confidence in learning English, so as to form good learning habits and effective learning strategies, and finally develop independent learning ability. Also, it's aimed to make the students master basic knowledge and skills in English, foster a primary sense of language, and attain elementary skills in using English. All these aspects should aid students in their future actual communication. Therefore, a student's ability to perform in English can be a reliable factor when judging his/her English level. The ultimate objective of language teaching is to develop the students' ability to communicate in this language, either in speaking or writing. With more and more frequent foreign exchanges and international cooperation between China and foreign countries, many secondary school students have begun to realize the importance and necessity of enhancing their ability to communicate in English, and wish to speak English fluently and idiomatically, which reinforces their comprehensive ability and lays a firm foundation for their future development. However in practical operations, many students found it hard to use English freely, and were always trapped in conceptual and psychological obstacles. Therefore, it has now become crucial for secondary school English teachers to learn how to foster the students' confidence in practicing spoken English and help them overcome the psychological obstacles in speaking such a foreign language in public. According to my own teaching experience, I found that the rehearsal and performance of English featurettes is a good way to encourage the students to communicate in English, and subsequently enhance their ability to utilize English. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate this curriculum activity.By applying domestic and overseas teaching methodologies, this paper addresses the necessity and feasibility of utilizing featurettes to carry out English teaching, and discusses how to implement such a novel mode in the senior secondary schoolaccording to my own experience. I also found that the chief functions of this mode were:l) The students gradually develop an active attitude towards studying English. 2) Their interest is aroused with English teaching improved. However, to implement such a mode also requires that the teachers should update their teaching ideas and switch their roles. To be sure, no class activity is without defects and the performance of featurettes is no exception. Therefore, there are still many issues requiring further research in this field. In all, the performance of English featurettes is a good method to enhance the students' listening, speaking, reading and writing abilities, foster their communication in English, arouse their interest in learning English, and enforce "education for all-round development" in English.
