On Women's Education In Modern Times (1898-1919)

In the ancient, the positions of Chinese women were very low. So they hardly could have the rights of education . The unfair treatments to women in education and family positions were the results of the feudal society .With the national crisis going further and western culture entering China ,the active bourgeois Intellectuals began to attack the unfair social system with "theory of national rights" as a weapon . They put forward the ideas of the equal rights between men and women .They claimed that they would set up women's school. Then they put the ideas into practice .So we can say that the arising of modern women's education really was in modern time (It means the periods from Reform to May-fourth period)The periods of women's education from Reform to May-fourth served as a bridge between the past and the later . The education of this periods freed women from their family as citizens and result in exploring theories of equal education between men and women . It set off an upsurge of setting up women's school and awoke the women's self-awareness . It promoted Qing government to issue the decree on women's education and set the foundation of women's education .The thesis is divided into four chapters :Chapter I emphasized to investigate woman educational arising and reason in modern times (refers to Reform to "May-fourth" period).The rise that modern woman educates is under the national conditions of the national crisis , which is influenced by the daughter studies and recommended and practise by the new developing intellectual of capitalist class. It made a start in Reform and developed at The 1911 Revolution of the beginning of the 20^th century. The woman education leaped qualitatively at the May-Fourth movement period.Chapter II probed into the theory achievement of the women education From Reform to May-Fourth Movement, the theory of this period has finished woman's educating from virtuous wife and good mother to woman people, then to person of the equal of man and woman by the statement of Liang-qichao, Sun-zhongshan and Cai-yuanpei as well. The educational practice of the woman later on is basically bated on these theories.
