The purposes of the paper were to measure the physiological burden indices of 161 physical education classes through (?) healthy students' pulse rate during classes at two middle schools of Songjiang district and Pudong district in Shanghai and to evaluate the correlation between physiological burden index and teaching contents, physiological burden percent (K value), average of pulse rate in classes respectively for further implementation of the Shanghai Physical Education and Fitness Standard and for improvement of teaching quality of physical education class in middle schools in Shanghai. Results show that:1, The physiological burden index of all classes is 1.43 ± 0.22 (x ±s), the physiological burden indices of bodys' casses are 1.53 + 0.21 and 1.35 ± 0.19. Both class periods and physiological burden indices of the four grades are: 46 periods, 1.31±0.24 for grade 7; 42 periods, 1.64 + 0. 13 for grade 9; 28 periods, 1. 37 + 0. 15 for grade 10 and 45 periods,1.38 ± 0.14 for grade 11, respectively.2, In class structure ,the physiological burden indices of preparatory section, fundamental section and end section are: 1.22 + 0.21,1.45 ± 0.24,1.81±0.25 for all classes; 1.24 ± 0.22,1.58 ± 0.23,1.59 ± 0.24 for 66 boys' classes; 1.21±0.20,1.37 ± 0.21,1.34 ± 0.21 for 95 girls' classes; 1.16 ± 0.16, 1.32 ± 0.26, 1.38 ± 0.26 for grade 7; 1.36 ± 0.28, 1.69 ± 0.14, 1.61 ± 0.21 for grade 9; 1.19 ± 0.15, 1.40 ± 0.19, 1.40 + 0.18 for grade 10 and 1.18 ± 0.11, 1.40 ± 0.16, 1.37 ± 0.24 for grade11, respectively.
