For quite a long period of time, great achievements has been reached; meanwhile effective work like education of wiping out illiteracy has been down in the fields of adult education. For the past several years, with the further development of reform and open, as well as the emergency of information economy, the notions of lifelong education, lifelong learning society are gradually changing people's traditional concept of education. This article discusses the history of adult education in China, particularly the history of adult after 1949. The article holds the history of adult education can divided into three periods: first, the beginning of adult education (1949-1965); second, remain stagnant of adult education (1966-1976); third, development of adult education (1977-).When we analyses the causes of problems of adult education, the article holds adult education is in some degree affected by the expanding enrollment of higher education and the rapid development of occupational education. While at the same time it can hardly gain development due to the stereotype engrained in society, sluggishness legislation in this area, remaining in the diploma compensation phase in some province and cites, as well as problems in adult education quality at the present stage. Through explicit social survey, analyzing adult education in Hefei city from the perspective of sociology and educational-sociology, this article suggests that present adult-education in Hefei is in confrontation with"double marginalization". On the one hand, with its own relative independence as a system in modernization, education, compared with key systems of political or economical institution, plays a marginal role; on the other hand, in terms of educational system itself, adult education is being marginalized by ordinary education.
