Media literacy is an expanded information and communication skill that is responsive to the changing nature of information in our society. It addresses the skills students need to be taught in school, the competencies citizens must have as we consume information in our homes and living rooms, and the abilities workers must have as we move toward the 21st century and the challenges of a global economy. Media literacy education is defined as the development of skills to empower persons to be both critical thinkers and creative producers of an increasingly wide range of messages using image, language and sound. It is the skillful application of literacy skills to media and technology messages.In China, media literacy education is a new field. It's the most significant part for the quality education of youngsters. The issue of how to change the media education from professional one to public training is not merely the first task for promoting quality education of youngsters, but also one of the kernel problems for strengthening citizenship education in an informational society. Seeing from the angle of the reality and the future, our country should develop it. Starting media education is the requirement of developing media technology. It is one of the means to resist information hegemony. It is also the important basis of efficient information utilization.The thesis discourses upon the topic of the college students'media literacy education. On the basis of several media literacy researches carried out in Shanghai and Hebei Province, I sum up the characteristics and tendencies of college students'media-contacting behavior, and point out their bad influences for the students'development. Finally, I bring forward some opinions about what should the university and the society do to improve the college students'media literacy.
