| Outside reading of primary school students has a very important effect on Chinese teaching and children's development. As the gradual deep going of the new curriculum reform, the effect is more obvious. To grasp the condition about the outside reading of primary school students in Kunming city accurately, I made a random sampling on the 2092 students of the fourth, fifth and sixth grades from two experimental primary schools, two ordinary ones, four village ones in Kunming city and handed out questionnaires. Then I talked with 160 Chinese teachers in these 8 schools. The survey is mainly based on the Chinese Curriculum Standard and it is mainly about the Kunming primary school students' interest and motivation on outside reading, their outside reading time and reading contents, reading methods and habits and also their parents' and teachers' instruction on their outside reading.This thesis contains four parts. The first part discusses the value of the students' outside reading and in outside reading, it should be student-centered in terms of involvement and experiencing. The second part is about the survey of the students' interest and motivation, their reading time and contents, reading methods and habits as well as parents' and teachers' instruction on the children's reading. The results of the survey show that the students did not take great interest in outside reading. Their reading contents, reading habits and methods did not reach the requirement of the Chinese Curriculum Standard. Their parents and teachers did not give enough support and instruction to their reading. Among the schools, the problems of the village primary schools were the worst. The experimental primary schools were better than the ordinary ones. The third part analyzes the main reasons causing the problems in view of the society, schools, families and teachers. I thought, these problems mainly resulted from economic condition and teachers' and parents' education background. The fourth part discusses the solutions to the problems basing on the causes. Firstly we should change our minds and offer a good reading circumstance to the students. Secondly the teachers and parents should put emphasis on training the students' reading interest and give them proper instruction. |
