Teachers play a key role in the process of education and their professional abil ity has direct impact on the teaching quality. Thus, promoting their talent in this aspec t should be listed on the top agenda of educational reforms. Facing the new curriculu m reform, how do the biology teacher in middle school deal with the emerging situati on, put the spirit of new reform into practice and change the content, procedure as wel l as methodology of traditional classroom teaching? In this connection, this paper pro poses that evaluation of classroom teaching should play a positive role and provide he lpful instruction and assistance to the teachers.This paper summarize the history and current situation of the evaluation of classroom teaching by literature, evaluate both the teacher's classroom behavior and the student's classroom behavior by referring to the modern educational evaluation theory, constructivism and key-role education. And we have analyzed the expectation and requirement of the new curriculum on life science teachers, life science classes and evaluation of classroom teaching. After investigating the current situation of the assessment of classroom teaching in 15 middle schools in Shanghai, we conclude that some shortcomings exist in the choosing of approaches, setting evaluation structure and index, and the application of these approaches.Based on theoretical researches, This paper focuses on the classroom teaching evaluation scale. Firstly, we gathered the opinions of biology teachers in middle schools through questionnaire accompanying with interview. Secondly we set up the primitive evaluation system by content analysis and group factors analysis, and the final indices have been chosen after consulting the experts . We have selected 2 first-grade evaluation indices — teacher's classroom behavior and the student's classroom behavior, 6 second-grade evaluation indices — teaching attitude, instructional design, teaching literacy, atmosphere in class, students' achievement, and 23 third-grade evaluation indices, including 12 indices used to evaluate the teacher and the rest evaluate students. Then we did statistic analysis by Delphi method and g,ot the relative weight of the indices. Thus the final evaluation scale was finished. The reliability and validity has been examined by revising the manuscript and testing it in life science classes in the middle schools. The Kendall's coefficient of concordance of the evaluators' reliability is 0.6402, and correlation coefficient of the test-re-test reliability is 0.968.Taken together, we can conclude that this evaluation scale has a relatively high reliability.
