Service learning is one of important methods in American higher education's leadership education. This article explores the degree, function, models, types, process and characteristics that service learning has in leadership education program, and analyzes background of leadership education and service learning to know the relation between them. The purpose is to understand leadership education and talented education in American higher education mere detailed, and the values to China's higher education. The mostly questions include what service learning in leadership education is, why, and suggestions for us. The conclusion is: because service learning is more effective to leadership development as bridge combines theory and practice than other methods in leadership education, and has leadership traits comparing general service learning. It becomes the one of most methods in leadership education. For China's higher education, the values reveal in three fields at least: quality education, social practice activities and curriculum reform. Research methods include documentation method, comparative method, historical method, analysis method, inductive method, case study method, etc.
