The field of learning strategies has been very active for the wide recognition among researchers of the role of the learners' autonomy in language learning this century. At the same time, there are more and more researches on learning strategies. However, the author finds that fewer researches are done on middle school students, especially vocabulary learning strategies. Teachers spend much time on vocabulary teaching but students still find it hard work to learn English vocabulary and feel heavy mental pressure. Students think that vocabulary is one of the most important parts in learning English. Just as D. A. Wilkins, in his Linguistics in Language Teaching (1978), wrote, "Without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed."This paper attempts to explore vocabulary learning strategies used by the students learning English in Senior Grade One at a middle school. The training of certain vocabulary learning strategies is also discussed.During the author's teaching, the following questions often occur to the author: Why do the students have low ability to remember English words? What are the major vocabulary learning strategies of middle school students in Senior Grade One? Can the students remember words effectively after vocabulary learning strategies being trained? Is there any relationship between vocabulary learning and language proficiency?Based on the questions, an investigation was conducted in the application of the students' English vocabulary learning strategies.
