Targeting at the development strategies of Shanghai Medical Instrumentation College (SMIC for short, an institute of higher vocational education), this article intends to elaborate on the measures the college should take to follow the guidelines of the higher vocational education, adapt itself to the changing market, adjust its educational concepts and objectives and seek the new opportunities to develop itself while overcoming its own shortcomings in the process of the higher education transformation. In particular, it will have a detailed analysis of the current educational system of SMIC and discuss its future development strategies accordingly.SMIC is the only college nationwide devoted to the cultivation of professionals in the fields of medical instruments and pharmaceutical apparatus. It is also responsible for the further education for those technicians in the industries of medical instruments and pharmaceutical machinery. It has been 45 years since its establishment in 1960, so it has earned a good reputation and a vantage position in the industry of medical instruments. In July 2003, Shanghai Municipal Education Commission announced that SMIC would be affiliated to University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USST) and that USST Medical Instruments School would be established for undergraduates education and further research work. Then what will be the future of SMIC? Will it gradually disappear or pursue further development?
