With China opening up to the outside, trade and exchanges between China and other countries increase. English, as one of international languages is playing more and more important role. In modern society, people pay more attention to person's cooperation consciousness and the ability of communication. Over the last twenty years, the English teaching in middle schools has made great progress: the scale of teaching is expanded constantly, and the teaching level is improved continuously, teachers'quality is increased substantially etc. But the development of our English teaching can't meet the demand of the economical and social development, such as: we pay too much attention to the teaching of knowledge about language and neglect the training of language skills etc.National Standards of English Course (Experimental Edition) explicitly indicates: the focus of reform of English course is to change the situation of putting more emphasis on grammar and lexical explanations, and of the tendency of overlooking learners'language performance on actual occasions. The reform advocates experience, practice, participation, cooperative and communicative learning style and task-oriented approach based on learners'interests, life experience and cognitive level, aiming at developing learners'comprehensive abilities. Cooperative learning as a breakthrough and complement against traditional classroom instruction is widely applied in the instructional design of English courses for middle school. The cooperative learning plays an important role in arousing classroom study atmosphere, stimulating the students'interests in English study, improving student's academic achievement and forming the good non-cognitional quality of the student.Under such background, basing on the cooperative learning theory, Studies Education Theory, New Curriculum Theory, combining English teaching features of high school, the writer discusses experiment strategy and practical approach in high schools. The paper is divided into four parts.The first part, the concept of cooperative learning. This part gives an overview of historical development of cooperative learning, the theory of cooperative learning theory, the definition of cooperative learning, the factors of cooperative learning in high schools. The second part, the strategies of cooperative learning on teaching in high schools. Cooperative learning is one kind of new teaching form which new curriculum reform emphasizes on. It is different from the traditional approach that focuses on student's activity and group work.The third part, experimental study of cooperative learning on teaching in high schools.
