At the background of economic globalization, knowledge is playing a more and more important role in all the fields. Peace and development have been the main theme in the new age. Cooperation has become a very important quality for people to exist and develop in the modern world. The cooperative and creative spirits have become the era spirits in the 21st century and an important part in one's outlook on life and world. So there is a new demand of cultivation of the spirits of team cooperation as well as creativity for teenagers. Education has to fulfill the global task for all the students in the world. Traditional English teaching is always dominated by a teacher-centered an examination-oriented method. Knowledge of English is transmitted through the instructor who acts as an authority and a knowledge-giver to students, who are simply silent and passive knowledge receiver. Therefore it is natural to find that students cannot communicate or read fluently even after having learned English for several years.Cooperative learning has been adopted widely all over the world and has been regarded as the most effective teaching model and strategy with which students' creativity, consciousness of collectivism and cooperation will be promoted. Cooperative learning as a breakthrough and complement against traditional classroom instruction is widely applied in the instructional design of English courses for high school. The cooperative learning plays an important role in arousing classroom study atmosphere, stimulating the students' interests in English study, improving student's academic achievement and forming the good non-cognitive quality of the student.This thesis aims at probing into the feasibility of applying cooperative learning in groups to the senior English class. By means of theory analysis and experiment, it first describes the present situation of English class teaching and reviews the concepts, significance, background and strategy of cooperative learning. Then it analyses how to carry out the teaching method in senior English class. In order to prove whether cooperative learning on English teaching in high schools is effective or not, the author carries out an experimental study by choosing one class as the subjects of the study. From the study, we can see that cooperative learning on English teaching in high schools is feasible and effective. And this thesis also analyses the problems of cooperative learning on teaching in high schools and offers the solution to these problems.
