Information technology and its application in the field of education are on the quick development way. In the history of educational development, every move of technology influences education deeply and leads to the changes of educational theories, educational concepts, educational approaches and methods. Nowadays, it is common for people to use multi-media to facilitate English language teaching and learning. Studies on this field also show up at a rapid pace. But, what is the current situation of English multi-media teaching and learning (MTL) in middle schools? And what are the barriers in the implementation of MTL? These perplexities are discussed in the thesis. The study tries to reveal the current situations of MTL to provide the reform of English teaching in middle school with the necessary reference. The subjects of the study are seven middle schools in five cities of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The instruments adopted in this survey include written questionnaires and classroom observation. The findings indicate that MTL is welcome to most teachers and students. However, the findings also reveal some weaknesses: (1) multi-media is not utilized sufficiently; (2) learning environment is not well equipped; (3) teachers'knowledge and skills to operate multi-media are still deficient; (4) the communication or interaction between teachers and students is far from enough; (5) students have the difficulties in carrying out autonomous learning with the assistance of Internet. On the basis of the theories of behaviorism, cognitivism, constructivism and multiple intelligence theory, the findings are analyzed and discussed. In this thesis, some suggestions are given from five aspects: (1) school should build up a good learning environment; (2) teachers should combine the teaching approach with the multi-media; (3) both teacher and students should master multi-media technology to facilitate teaching and learning; (4) teacher should get feedback of teaching timely; (5) students should be more active in learning with multi-media and give feedback to teacher objectively. The results of the study indicate that MTL is proved to be superior to traditional teaching mode by empirical experience, but we should not abandon the latter one totally for it has so many merits. The best way is to combine the MTL with the traditional one rationally. Only by doing so, could teaching be improved.
