The development and research of teaching methods have experienced a long history. Grammar-translation is a traditional and ancient teaching method. With the development of society and the changes of teaching objectives, it has been developed, improved, adjusted and restructured constantly. At present, Grammar-translation method is still being used widely and plays an important part in English teaching of our senior middle schools. This thesis compares the features between Grammar-translation method and Communicative Teaching Approach. At the same time it analyses the reasons and necessity for the use of the Grammar-translation method. In the context of the new curriculum for the English course of the senior middle schools, the writer reconsiders Grammar-translation method and explores the principles we must follow when we use Grammar-translation method. Then the thesis develops a set of teaching strategies and the related models that could be used flexibly according to the different conditions of our schools. It is the intention of this thesis to make this traditional teaching method contribute most to the English teaching of senior middle schools.
