Novel is a major category of literature. Novel takes up a great percentage in Chinese teaching in the middle school, but it is long in length, abundant in characters, complex in plot and rich in context, which brings about a lot of difficulties in the teaching. Moreover, it is worsened with such factors as outdated teaching idea, shortsighted educational environment, and de-novel tendency - concept diagrams, looseness and incohesion occurring in the teaching. These problems induce the writer to work on this thesis. This paper intends to guide a multi-appreciation over novels starting from their core i.e. characters, with a reflection of the fundamental idea proposed by The Chinese Language Curriculum Standards for General Higher Schools (Experimental Edition) to foster aesthetic and explorative ability among students. The author advocates illustrating novel characters in the vision of aesthetics, and discovering the rule of illustration. The external as well as internal appreciation theories should be combined in the analysis of the novel characters and some other major theories of characters explanation are also to be referred to. This paper suggests a new thinking in novel teaching to enhance students' competency in appreciation, imagination, creativity and critical thinking through the proposals that a) the errors of traditional novel character teaching should be corrected, b) new methods of appreciation are to be introduced, and c) the teaching cases of appreciating novel characters in multi-way are to be studied.
