As one of the main means of inputting languages , reading plays an important part in learning English. The reading levels not only influence the learners' understanding of the input materials and the absorbing of the useful information, but also have an effect on the smoothness and quality of the output materials. Because of the importance of reading in learning English, the teaching of reading has been paid much attention to. In the contemporary society full of information, the targets and methods of the teaching and learning of English reading are renewed and given higher demands so that the cultivated English learners can use English to exchange information in a faster and better way, hence having an effective communication.However, there still remain so many problems in the teaching and learning of Senior English reading in China as follows: bad reading habits, not knowing reading strategies, poor background knowledge resulting in the low reading speed and poor reading ability of the learners; as to the teaching of reading, the teaching methodology is simple ;the atmosphere of the class is dull; the teachers still focus on the explanation of vocabulary and grammar, and ignore the teaching of reading strategies and background knowledge and the training the students' reading ability. As a result, the learners have difficulty in satisfying the needs of the development of the society. The teaching of English reading demands reforming.In the thesis, the writer makes use of some interviews, questionnaires and her teaching practice to find out the problems existing in the teaching and learning of Senior English reading in China, analyses the causes of the problems and the necessity of teaching reform under the guidance of some researches and theories about reading from experts both abroad and at home, and puts forward some strategies of reforming the teaching of Senior English reading, including strengthening the students' reading awareness, developing their good reading habits, changing the teachers' concepts of teaching, enriching the classroom teaching forms, using the multi-media and undertaking the training of reading strategies. In addition, it is also pointed out that during the teaching of reading, we should be aware of the different levels of the students, pay attention to the emotional factors and try to arouse the students' interests and strengthen their confidence. An experiment on multi-level teaching is also presented.
