Chinese higher professional education, an important component in Chinese higher education system, is the main approach for our China to realize the popularization of higher education. Since the 21st century, as an important strength of cultivating highly-specialized talents on production, construction, management and service on the first line, quickening manpower construction, improving the quality of labors thoroughly, developing vigorously and blasting off economy, it is widely concerned and appreciated in China even all over the world. Due to the short history of professional education, there exists a slight insufficiency in its theoretical study, which has limited the professional education in practice. Thus, in order to perfect the theoretical system of our higher professional education, and in turn to guide its current practice, it is beneficial for us to review the history of higher professional education in modern China and to identify its main connotations and features and determine its realistic guiding significance.According to the background, foundation, development and patterns of westernization colleges, this thesis compared some principles on International Standard Classified of Education (ISCED1997) with some formed characteristics of Chinese professional education as well as talent cultivation patterns; applied following study methods: data analysis, history study, contrast study; analyzed characteristics of higher professional education in westernization colleges, trying to probe the very source of Chinese professional education; drew an objective conclusion, which renders beneficial experience for developing professional education afterwards.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part gives a brief introduction on the origin, the significance, the range, the methods of the study, and the definition of some basic concept as well; definites the characteristics of higher professional education, and differs it from ordinary higher education The second part, introduces the background and reasons of westernization colleges rising. The third part is the birth and the development of Westernization Colleges, introduces their three kinds of characteristics. The fourth section is analysis on educational characteristics of Westernization Colleges, compares some principles on International Standard Classified of Education (ISCED1997) with some formed characteristics of Chinese professional education as well as talent cultivation patterns, trying to conclude that Westernization Colleges have characteristics both higher education and professional education. The fifth section is historical significance and function of Westernization Colleges, objectively affirmed their positive aspects and refuted negative ones, some reasonable cores are beneficial for us to develop our current higher professional education.
