Reading, as the major channel for students to get linguistic knowledge, has long been paid much attention to in foreign language teaching and learning. However, many English reading teaching practices in junior middle schools are not satisfactory. Teachers are used to the teacher-centred classroom teaching model, and often regard their students as passive receivers of reading knowledge,which can result in low efficiency.The rapid development and wide application of computers offer both great challenges and opportunities for education. As a communicational media, Internet is becoming more and more important in our life and study. Undoubtedly, the wide spread of multimedia technology and the advent of the Internet create new opportunities for language learning and expand possibilities for using it to support English reading teaching.This paper reviews the development of CALL, and introduction to the web-based language teaching. At present, in junior middle schools, the research about web-based English reading teaching is limited. This paper attempted to make researches on theories and practices from the following aspects: the relation of students'achievement in reading comprehension and web-based teaching environment; the roles of students and teachers in web-based teaching environment; the relation of students'learner autonomy and web-based teaching environment; what are the attitudes of students towards the in web-based teaching environment?Then the author carried out an action research of web-based English reading teaching at Dalian Xigang Junior Middle School. Testing and questionnaire are used in this research, and the effective results will be tested by statistical analysis. Then all the data were calculated by SPSS 11.5.The results indicate that it's effectiveness for improving students'individual learning ability and achievement of reading comprehension. Computer assisted language teaching can make students increasing motivation, forming positive attitude, increasing self-confidence and reducing anxiety. Whether learning takes place completely online or in a multimedia classroom, students can extend their learning beyond what the traditional classroom offers for the improvement of their ability and confidence in reading in English.At last, the author pointed out the limitations of the survey and suggested the further study.
