The development of higher education is hinged on the socio-economic development of a society. In the twenty-first century when China enters a stage of building a well-off society and accelerating the modernization of its socialist construction, China's higher education has ushered a critical historic period of its reform, and the source of investment and the agents of investment have been greatly expanded. Therefore, people have been increasingly concerned with the efficient allocation of higher education resources.From the perspective of the higher education institutions, this problem means expanding the fund-raising sources from the outside world, and maximizing the utility of the given resources to their utmost inside a university. We believe that the theory of performance evaluation of a business is a good reference for evaluating a college's performance of a university. By evaluating the efficiency of resources of a department of a university, it is hoped that departments of a university can optimize the efficiency of the allocation of resources.A college or a department is a fundamental component of a university. There exists great difference in their financial strength and their academic levels, and they vary a greatly deal in their roles, characteristics and responsibilities. Previous studies have not solved the problem of evaluating different colleges, with allowances of differences of colleges. In this paper, we introduce the notion of classification into the the system of the evaluation indexes for colleges of a university. This paper takes the data for 25 colleges of a university from 2003 to 2005 as a sample, and conducts an empirical research on the performance of different colleges. This paper has isolated the critical factors for the performance of a college and provides a good reference for the management of a higher education institution...
