There might be relationship between the the ratio (2D:4D) of the 2nd finger length (2D) and the 4th finger length(4D) and the genetics of fitness and performance. There are evidences that the 2D:4D is established in utero and there is a negative correlation of prenatal and adult testosterone. High prenatal testosterone promotes the growth of the right hemisphere and facilitates visual-spatial ability. Therefore, 2D:4D might be a good genetic marker of athletic performance. For the related topics, there are many oversea studies, but there are few domestic studies. In order to provide a feasibility indicator for domestic athletic election, we conduct statistical studies of 2D:4D of pupils and their athletic performance and culture performance in this thesis.Subjects: Three hundreds and eighty-two pupils were enrolled from the Affiliation Primary School of South China Normal University. The digital pictures of both hands were taken from obverse surface. Among them, the eight indistinct/unreadable pictures were excluded. There were four ranks of athletic marks: disqualification (bellow 60), qualification (60-74), good (75-89), superiority (over 90). We also had the final exam marks of Chinese, mathematics and English for grade four pupils.Methods: The hands of the relaxation subjects were placed on a glass plate of 3mm thickness, and the pictures of their labeled palm were taken by a Kodak 600 digital camera 30 cm away from the glass plate. All of the digital pictures were treated to obtain 2D, 4D and 2D:4D by Photoshop software. To test the repeatability of our measurements, hands from 20 randomly chosen subjects were measured twice. The intra-class correlation coefficients of the first and second measurements were high for both hands (r=0.98 for left hand and r =0.99 for right hand). All analyses were performed by Frequencies,, One-Way ANOVA, Bivariate Analysis of SPSS software 12.0Results: There were following results in this thesis.1. The Frequency histograms showed that mormal distribution holds for right 2D:4D(right digit ratio, rr)and lift 2D:4D(left digit ratio, 11), and the rr and ll of either boys or girls have significant correlation.2. According to ANOVA of 2D:4D and the rank of athletic marks, there was significant difference for rr (P<0.05), but there was not statistical significance for ll or the mean of rr and ll (mean digit ratio of rr and ll, rl). For 2D:4D and the rank of athletic marks, there is negative correlation for rr so that low rr is related to high athletic mark, but there is not any correlation for ll and rl. 3. There is significant sexual difference of 2D:4D and the rank of athletic marks, so that the boy's 2D:4D was significantly lower than girl's one, which is not significantly affected by grade or class.4. Means Plots showed that there is the positive correlation between the rank of athletic marks and total marks, mathematics marks, Chinese marks or English marks so that good athletic marks are correlated with good marks of mathematics, Chinese or English.5. For total mark and 2D:4D, there is negative linearity relation for rr so that the lower rr is correlated with higher total mark, but there is not any correlation for ll or rl.Conclusion: The negative relation between rr and athletic performance might be used for athletic election...
