Students in senor middles schools are special not only for the characteristics of their physiological development, but also because of the ever-changing features in their psychological progress. As a transitional period of a person's growth, adolescence is marked by conflicts and problems that we all have to face in the process of growing-up. These conflicts and problems, if dealt with properly, will lead the youth to maturity and success; if not, are likely to contribute to their failures and can even lead them astray. Thus, to help foster a healthy personality, which can be viewed as the recognition and cultivation of the students themselves as individuals, becomes an essential task of Chinese teaching in senior middle schools. However, the current practices of Chinese education therein are exclusively affected by college entrance examinations. As a result, the fostering of healthy personality is largely ignored by many schools, whose focus has always been on the diffusion of knowledge. These practices are bound to generate severe consequences if we keep turning a blind eye to them: the students, when confronted with difficulties in academic promotion, job-hunting, interpersonal communication, may be unable to take effective measures; they may fail to cope with the various happenings in their daily life; they may not view life, and the value of life in perspective; to make matters worse, when faced with failures and frustrations, they may be at a loss. Thus, more efforts should be made to help the students shape a healthy personality, to add to their ability to cope with difficulties, their ability to endure hardships, to adjust to the environment. And these efforts have to be made without delay. Based on the work of the predecessors, taking into account the expected objectives to be achieved among the students in senior middle schools, this thesis puts forward its own definition of the concept of"healthy personality", so that an effective mechanism, which begins with theories, leads on through practice and eventually back to theoretical generalization, can be established. According to this mechanism, it is expected that the generalized theory will provide insights into, and can be used as a guide in, the fostering of a healthy personality.First, a comparison is made between the concept popular with scholars and the understanding of the students to make it possible to advance the definition needed in this article. What follows is an argument for the point that the fostering of a healthy personality is essential to the teaching of Chinese. With the concepts clarified, here comes the third chapter, the central part of this thesis: the years in senior high is a critical stage for the fostering of a healthy personality. Further supported by the results of the surveys mentioned above, the chapter concludes that the possession of a healthy personality is the pursuit of the contemporary senior high students. With the doubts on the necessity of the task removed, the article proceeds to look into the strategies for fulfilling such a task. Bearing this in mind, in Chapter Four, the author intends to find out a way that fits in well with the contemporary senior high students and is effective in fostering a healthy personality among them by analyzing the factors hindering the task, by reviewing the current textbooks of Chinese in use, and citing examples in the real lecturing situations. Thus, the author completes the circle of starting with theory and then looking into the practice and then returning to theoretical exploration of the problem, and there comes the end of the article.
