Self-handicapping refers to people deliberately reduce their effort or find some excuses adverse to achievement before an evaluating environment ,trying to escape attributing their poor performance to their low ability so as to protect their self-worth. Self-handicapping can be classified into two categories: claimed self-handicapping and behavioral self-handicapping. Behavioral self-handicapping are those behaviors before an evaluating situation such as procrastination, drunk, lacking in sleep and inappropriately participating in various activities or refusing to review the lessons before an examination. Claimed self-handicapping refer to people claim some factors that will affect their performance such as tension, anxiety, poor health, et al before an evaluating situation. From the emotional perspective, self-handicapping protects the self-esteem, so it can be called an adaptive strategy. However, from the view of point of the academic performance, self-handicapping result in low achievement and more need for self-handicap, which forms the foundation of a malignant recycle, so in this point it is regarded as an adaptive strategy. Based on the theory of self-worth , this study explored the issue why"some students unwilling to do their best"from the opposite aspect of the study motivation, mainly trying to explore the relation among self-efficiency,examination anxiety and self-handicapping. By surveying 329 senior middle school students, this paper studies the relation among self-efficiency,examination anxiety and self-handicapping. The result reveals that (1)on the whole, the difference of self-handicapping score is different for all students of different level of self-efficiency, the difference of self-handicapping score is significant among the students in Grade 1 and female in Grade 2 and female in Grade 3, the difference of self-handicapping score is insignificant among the male in Grade 2 and the male in Grade 3; (2)on the whole,the difference of self-handicapping score is significant for all students of different level of examination anxiety;(3)there is interactive relationship of self-handicapping score for the students in Grade 1.
