Mathematics education dates back to 2000 years ago in China. Since the new educational system was born in Qing Dynasty, the study of mathematics teaching method came into being with the development of mathematics education. It began with translation of foreign works and is gradually perfecting itself with creation and exploration in last in late Qing Dynasty and the early time of Public of China. It was hard time but worthwhile for the study of mathematics teaching method. My thesis is a syctematic research into the history of mathematics teaching method of late Qing Dynasty and early time of the Republic of China. It is conducted by analyzing the literature and given a brief acount of the history of education in China. The main content of my thesis is as follows:â… .I based on the survey of the development of mathematics education in China, the thesis dwells on the ancient concepts about mathematics teaching method and ways of thinking in solving mathematical problems by taking as example"Xi Suan Gang Mu"written by Yang Hui who is the famous mathematician and mathematical educationalist in Song Dynasty, which was a very important document of mathematics teaching method in the history of mathematics education in archaic China.â…¡. After expounding the historical background of political, educational and mathematical development when the new education system was born in late Qing Dynasty, the thesis explores the history and features of the study of mathematics teaching method in late Qing Dynasty from the following four perspectives: (1) Requirements for mathematics teaching method stipulated Qin Ding Xue Tang Zhang Cheng ( School charter authorized by the souereign) issued in 1902 and Zou Ding Xue Tang Zhang Cheng issued in 1904. (2) The contributions to mathematics teaching method made by Shang Wu Publisher. (3) A detailed exploration of the profound effect exerted in China by Japanese mathematics teaching method, through an introduction of Arithmetic Items and Teaching Method written by Fujizawa (Wang Guowei translated the works from Janpanese into Chinese), a famous mathematician and mathematical educationalist in Japan and the comparison between Japanese educational system of mathmatics and that of China; A further analysis of the history and influence of Herbartian teaching method introduced into China from Japan and his way of thinking about mathematics teaching. (4) The characteristics of mathematics teaching method in late Qing Dynasty: Focused on the research of mathematics teaching method in elementary school; The mathematics teaching method is a copy of those in Japan; Only have a study of literature but not have experimental study of mathematical teaching method, etc.â…¢. An elaboration is given of the history of mathematics teaching method research after a brief account of the development of educational system of mathematics during the period of the Republic of China. It is conducted from the five perspectives: (1) I expound the requirements and features of mathematics teaching method stipulated in the objectives of mathematics teaching method, with a reference to the change of the terms and its significance from instructing method in the late Qing Dynasty to teaching method early the Republic of China in 1919. (2) Taking clues from the achievemen of researches on mathematics teaching method in Teaching Method for All the Subjects written by Zhong Luzhai, I conduct researches on the principles and strategies of mathematical teaching in middle school. (3) I come up with four characteristics of the teaching method during the Repubilic China by looking into associated essays which are in the Journal of Education, Secondary Arithmetics Monthly, Teaching and Learning, etc. and exploring teaching method researches in elementary and middle school. As well as mathematics teaching method introduce from abroad. (4) I also elaborate on the debates about the feasibility of integrating mathematics teaching method among researchers.â…£. Yu Ziyi, a famous educationalist in China, whose mathematics teaching method researches cover late Qing Dynasty, the Republic of China and People's Republic of China until 1960s, has made outstanding contributions to the development of mathematics teaching method. After giving a brief account of Yu Ziyi's life, I expound his views about science and arts in general teaching method, his ideas about mathematics teaching methods, research methods, and their revelutions for mathematics education today.In addition, attached with the thesis are three appendixes.(1) Yearbook of modern mathematics education in China.(2) Table of research literature on mathematics teaching method.(3) A recorded interview with Zhang Dianzhou, a famous mathematics educationalist in China.
