After the first Opium War, China becomes a semi-colonial and semi-feudal country. Because of the social properties changed, Enlightenment education has also had the profound change. At the same time, the spread of western learning gave birth to the modern Elementary education. From the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China, Enlightenment education evolves gradually to modern Elementary education. In this period, Enlightenment education experience the complex development of the twists and turns, which finds a chance to existence through the improvement, banned, merger, repeal. Because of the limitation of Enlightenment education, it can’t adapt to social change and replaced by Elementary education.The literature materials of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China were extensively reviewed. This paper analysis the influence of the education policy and education system on Enlightenment education and introduces that Enlightenment education separates from the field of China’s education step by step and at the same time Elementary education grows to adapt to social change. These materials represent the development direction of education reform in the social transition period and provide valuable historical experience for today’s the reform of Elementary school education.This thesis research framework and basic viewpoints are as follows:The first chapter is the introduction, which discusses the research origin and the research significance, introduces the necessity and importance of the research. And then introduces the research review, research methods, innovation and limitations, and finally defines the important concept.The second chapter combs the development of Enlightenment education in the history of China, in order to understand the history of the development and change of Enlightenment education before the late Qing Dynasty.The third chapter which introduces the related education policy and literature material in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China analysis the change of education purpose, education content, education method, teaching material and the teachers during the evolution of Enlightenment education to Elementary education.The fourth chapter that bases on the process of the evolution of Enlightenment education in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China discusses the characteristics that are emerged by the process of the evolution from Enlightenment education to Elementary education.The fifth chapter summarizes the rational contents of the evolution from Enlightenment education to Elementary education and some reasonable suggestions are obtained for modern Elementary education.
