Goal: To compare the grades and psychological health of the boarders and day students to find whether the boarding system have effects on their grades and psychological health. Methods: The research objects are students in the West School and East School of Shandong Experimental High School. Take the students (students in two classes from each grade.) at random from the West School (nonresident school) and the East School (resident school), collect their entrance marks before entering the high school and the marks they get in the high school, and then compare the marks in these two periods to see whether the difference exist or not. Take the students in two ordinary science classes from each grade respectively, (In grade one where science classes and art classes are not divided, take the ordinary classes students), test the students using Psychological State Self-evaluation form (SCL-90), and then compare the results. Results: From the grades, we can see the"t"values of the entrance grades of the two schools are respectively 0.24, 0.22, and 0.07, they have no evident differences (P>0.05). But on the comparison of the grades of the final examination in the first semester (To Grade Three, the grades are those got in the first model exam), the"t"values are respectively -4.12 (P<0.001), -2.17 (P<0.05) and -4.05 (P<0.001), the differences are rather evident, especially between Grade One and the Grade Three. On the comparison of the psychological health, except interpersonal sensitivity and terror factor have no evident difference, eight other factors of all the students tested are higher than that of the Chinese youth norms, and have evident differences. On the whole, except hostility factor, the average of other factors of the boarders are slightly higher than the nonboarders, but no significant differences. All the results show, on the whole, that whether living in school or not has little effect on the students, and their psychological health state are basicly the same. Boarders and nonboarders compared between different grades have no significant difference (P>0.05); but between grade one and grade two, the majority factors of the boarders are higher than that of the nonboarders. Boys in resident school and nonresident school have no evident difference in every respect. While the obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety of girls in resident school have higher scores than girls in nonresident school (P<0.05), and the interpersonal sensitivity of the girls in resident school are much higher those in nonresident school (P<0.01).Conclusion: In terms of school grade, the grades of the students in resident school are much higher than the grades of those in nonresident school, and boarding system can improve the grade of the students. Whether on the whole or from the comparison between different grades, the pcychological health of the students in resident school and that of the students in nonresident school have no evident difference, but their scores of the eight factors are much higher than Chinese youth norms. The fact that the obsessive-compulsive, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety of girls in resident school have higher scores than girls in nonresident school shows that the work to improve psychological health should be strengthened, and more work should be done to be concerned about the psychological health of the girls in resident school.
