Review On University Teachers' Roles During Hundreds Of Years

"Anyone in the world is playing some kinds of roles consciously or unconsciously in the world at anytime", the saying goes the same with the roles of university teachers. According to the definition of the word role in sociology, it is kind of a standard and behavioral pattern about people's rights and duties in accordance with their certain social status and identities. It is the behavioral aspiration posed on people of some identities, which becomes the foundation of the whole social colony or organization. No doubt, university teachers belong to a special group, which makes them endowed with some special essential charactersUniversity is a place of knowledge preaching. Since the founding of the first university in modern China in 1895, more than a hundred years have passed. University is always making an indelible contribution to the development of the society compared with any other social organization. University, the so called "gas station", to a great extent, has influenced the developing speed and orientation of the society. As a social organization, the roles and attitudes of those staffs will directly affect the realization of the functions of higher education. Therefore, it needs our attention on the analysis of their social roles. Only if we make a clear analysis on their social living situations can we reach an objective analysis land predict their possible contributions to the society.This paper takes the well-known Fujian Normal University (FJNU) as an example, to do research on the development of the social roles of university teachers during hundreds years' social changes. The author divides the time span into several parts, which includes the beginning of Republic of China, New Culture Movement, Great Revolution, KMT Domination, the establishment of New China, Cultural Revolution and the Reform and Opening up till now, to do analysis on the social roles and apparent characters acted by university teachers in different social backgrounds.In this paper, the author, combining the general case with the individual case, through the deep analysis and investigation, has made clear that, in the recent a hundred years, the function and nature of university have experienced essential changes, which have made the social reputation and roles of those teachers evolve from time to time. Especially currently, during the process of the entanglement of the academic value, market orientation and political orientation, university teachers' roles have developed from that of single and traditional to multiplex.
