English is becoming more and more important with the development of information society and the globalization of economy. As a carrier of information, English is used worldwide in numerous domains of human life. Reading is one of the means for people to obtain information from the external world. So it is utmost urgent to solve the problem of how to increase the reading ability.English reading is a kind of necessary social and cultural skills for people's living and development in modem society. The new syllabus of high school English treats the ability of obtaining and handling information as one of the abilities that we should put great emphasis on. The stage of high school is a key period for senior school students to learn English well. Most teachers pay attention to the teaching of reading comprehension, but students'reading ability has improved very slowly. As to this problem, this essay is aimed at doing the quantitative and qualitative research of reading strategies of high school students in the suburb. The purpose is to know about the application of reading strategies in the reading process, analyze the shortcomings of high school students in reading strategies and put forward some practical recommendations or countermeasures according to teaching practice and by means of reading literature.This paper investigates the use of English reading strategies among rural high school students, including the following three aspects: 1.Metacognitive strategy use; 2.The use of cognitive strategies; 3.Social/Emotional strategy use. Based on reading psychology and reading theoretical results, the article starts with a systematic research from the following aspects, such as the definition of reading ability, review of reading theory and the relevant relationship between reading strategies and reading comprehension. Then it is verified that the proper use of reading strategies helps students improve reading comprehension ability, at the same time, this paper raises the countermeasures and suggestions of solving the problems, focusing on the itemized analysis of the results of the survey, interviews and according to the students'existing weak points. As a teacher, we should grasp the core content of reading and make full use of reading strategies to cultivate students'reading ability.In this paper, English reading strategies are mostly based on questionnaire, individual interviews supplemented by selecting 120 Students from Si Fang suburban high school in Fu Shun city. The results of the surveys are analyzed as follows: 1. The existing problems of metacognitive strategy use: Many students lack the necessary understanding on reading comprehension, nor can they clearly know what to do and how to do it. Plenty of students don't pay enough attention to reading comprehension. They are unwilling to participate in it, they even have emotional conflicts when reading comprehension is mentioned. 2. The problems of cognitive strategy: some students lack necessary background knowledge and common sense; pragmatic thinking interference of their mother tongue; the difficulty of guessing the meanings of new words in context. Many students have great difficulty in understanding complex long sentences. 3. The problems in social emotional strategy use: students are lack of mend of English reading comprehension; they don't realize the significance of learning English enough; disorder of psychological anxiety in reading process. Sometimes they can't understand the author's emotion, attitude and concept of value in implied languages.As to the problems above, this essay puts forward reasonable solutions of the existing problems in reading strategies for senior high school students in rural. 1: Metacognitive strategy: (1) Define the importance and aims of English reading comprehension. (2) Train students'metacognitive capacity; (3) Help students to establish new reading goals and log. (4) Instruct students to strengthen extracurricular reading. (5) Guide students to make an overall understanding of the article; 2: Cognitive strategy: (1) Assist students to overcome the reading barrier in knowledge and common sense. (2) Avoid Chinese thinking in reading comprehension and make clever use of migration strategy; (3) Enhance students to practice reading skills and techniques; 3: Social/emotional strategy: (1) Stress on the significance of learning English.(2) Develop students'interest in English reading (3) Guide students to do effective collaborative learning; (4) Apply mitigation strategies in developing a healthy psychological reading.
