To pursue great-leap-forward development of the basic education in the rural areas of the middle and west China, to narrow the gap between the urban and rural areas, the state has invested a large volume of money to launch modern distance education project (hereinafter referred as MDEP) at the rural middle and primary schools (hereinafter referred as RMPS). With successive completion of the experimental & model projects of the MDEP at the RMPS, the MDEP has been overall developed in the Middle and West China, and is planned to cover the most middle and primary schools this year. With such a background, the sustainable development of the modern distance education (hereinafter referred as MDE) has been put forward. How to improve the MDE Level and utilization effects, and realize sustainable development, becomes the primary concern that needs more research.In the beginning, this dissertation defines the concepts of sustainable development, sustainable development of Education, the sustainable development of MDE at the RMPS, elaborates the basic contents and restrictive elements of the sustainable development of the MDE by use of theories. Then, taking the methods of field investigation, interview, informal discussion, questionnaire, index searching, etc., it analyses deeply the restrictive elements of the sustainable development of the MDE in the. South Sichuan Area. The study reveals that education concepts, management mechanism, money, utilization of teaching methods and teaching modes, construction of teaching resources, technical support, and appraisal mechanism are the main elements which limit the development of sustainable of the MDE at the RMPS. Based on the research, the effective ways and mechanism are proposed to realize the sustainable development of MDE at the countryside of South Sichuan area.
