Reading comprehension, commonly defined as an ability to gather information from printed words, is of great importance to the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) in China. As one of the four basic skills in English learning, reading ability plays a crucial role and its improvement can lead to the general development of all the other three skills. In the last two decades, the study on the teaching of reading comprehension has become the core of attention. However, though there have been many theoretical and empirical studies conducted in this area, the teaching status quo in western China is not given enough attention and students here still face serious problems in reading. Therefore, the study on the problems existing in the course of English reading and on exploring the solutions to these problems in high schools is of great significance to EFL teaching in this area.Given these facts, the present study was conducted with the aim to investigate the problems in students'reading and to provide some suggestions or possible solutions to these problems. Two different research methods were adapted in the study. Firstly, ten English teachers in different grades from three different schools in Erdos were selected randomly and interviewed with guided questions to find out the basic situation of English teaching as well as their teaching attitudes, methods, etc. Secondly, a questionnaire to gather students'basic information about their reading habits, reading ability, etc. was conducted among 500 students from different grades.Through these approaches, this study has found out some of the typical problems existing among students, which may provide some help for the teachers. Suggestions based on the research as well as the author's teaching experience were also proposed in this paper, which may serve as reference to solve these problems.However, due to the limitations from experiment scales and some volatile factors, further studies to explore this matter are still needed.
