The Educational Department has set the main goal of English teaching and learning as "developing the students' autonomous English learning" in the New Curriculum Criterion for Senior School.While the main channel of learning is through reading extensively after class.Reading,as a source of comprehensible input,plays an important role in Second Language Acquisition.Meanwhile, reading is an important way of inputting in learning a foreign language,it plays a key role in English teaching in senior schools.In the National Matriculation English Test,reading is the main method to test students' English ability.So it is the big subject for senior English teachers to know about the current situation of senior students' extra-curriculum autonomous reading and how to promote students' extra-curriculum autonomous reading.Firstly,this paper refers to the background,significance,aims and key research questions of the study.Secondly,it discusses the theoretical background through Humanism,Constructivism,Schema reading Theory,Krashen's Input Hypothesis.Thirdly,the author finds that there are some serious problems in our senior students' extra-curriculum autonomous reading and there are some differences between the students from special class and those from ordinary class by means of questionnaire on students from Class 8 and Class 9 in Senior Grade 1 of Yongding No.1 Middle School.Then,the author conducts a series of extra-curriculum autonomous reading activities.After about two terms' participation,the author finds that these autonomous reading activities can promote the students' autonomous reading largely,and the students from special class did better and better in reading comprehension tests and English tests through the students' self assessment,peer-assessment,periodic tests and the questionnaire of responses of extra-curriculum autonomous reading.At last,the author makes a conclusion about the study and puts forth some suggestions and the problems to be explored based on the study. |
