Faculty inbreeding phenomenon has attracted more and more attention in Chinese universities at present. It is wildly thought that faculty inbreeding phenomenon is a main reason why Chinese universities are lack of innovation and at low scientific research level compared with western universities or colleges. This study investigated the academic research productivity of inbred faculty by mathematical analysis method and tried to offer a reasonable explain on these phenomena.Considering the historical and realistic factors, this study explored several reasons of the high faculty inbred ratio existed in Chinese universities. Generally speaking, the impacts of traditional culture on the employment system, the adjustment of higher education in 1950's and the policies of graduates' distribution system are the three main reasons in the historical points of view. And additionally, the realistic reasons are the rigid employment conception of graduates in special periods and the limitation of some universities' geographical locations and financial supports.Case study is performed on the S Medical College in China. In the case study, I divided all the faculties into two groups, inbred one and non-inbred one. Firstly, Comparison is made between the academic research outputs of the two groups. The result showed that the inbred group has no obvious negative effects on the academic research outputs of the whole faculty. Secondly, when calculating the published peer-reviewed papers cited by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) duration in 2000-2006, it showed that in professor level and equivalent level, the non-inbred group always has a better result and while in associate professor level and equivalent level, the non-inbred group has a little worse result in the academic achievements point-of-view.Based on analysis data, it is very necessary to improve the degree origin structure of faculties in Chinese universities. And we should note that it is impossible and unnecessary to fully erase the inbreeding phenomenon in current Chinese universities. To efficiently solve the high inbred ratio in degree origin structure, three reasonable ways which are taking sound measurements, transforming the way of cultivating students and providing various opportunities for faculty's advance education, should be considered.
