Objective: This study examined the relationship between the relative change of skeletal muscle oxygen content of rowing-boat athletes in the process of grade exercising, as measured by Near Infrared Spectroscopy, and the change of the gas metabolism as an index of evaluation of aerobic capacity of rowing-boat athletes.Methods: The skeletal muscle oxygen content of right quadriceps femoris, gas metabolism and heart rate of Eighteen healthy volunteer male rowing-boat of WuHan college have been examined before the exercising, then subjects do Warming-up 5 minutes. Subjects performed incremental load that begin at 50 watts, then50 watts added every 3min until to subjects can not tolerant load on a rowing ergometer. The skeletal muscle oxygen content of right quadriceps femoris, gas metabolism and heart rate of subjects have been examined in the process of the exercising.Results: The skeletal muscle oxygen content of right quadriceps femoris decrease slightly at the grade 1 and grade 2(50-100W), at the grade 3(200 W), which decrease remarkably. The skeletal muscle oxygen content do not decrease with the increasing workloads when the workloads at a level. So the relative change of skeletal muscle oxygen content express the various workloads. At the same time, this study examined that the changes of gas metabolism consistent with the increasing workload. The analyses showed that there are close relationship between skeletal muscle oxygen content and VO(2r=0.989,P<0.01), and VE(r=-0.972,P<0.01), and HR(r=0.926, P<0.05). By the time and intensity of the skeletal muscle oxygen content appearing an"inflexion"are earlier than the gas metabolism during the incremental exercise.Conclusion: The changing curves of skeletal muscle Oxygen Content during incremental load exercise present a regular change with the various workloads, but the muscle Oxygen Content wouldn't close to zero and it appeared a"inflexion". So the relative changes of muscle oxygen content express the various workloads, and there is critical value ,the "breaking point"mentioned by scholars. In addition, the result shows: the time and the intensity of the skeletal muscle oxygen content appear an"inflexion"during incremental exercise are earlier than the others, also showed that the relationships between skeletal muscle Oxygen Content and other target of gas metabolism are significant correlation. Therefore, the change of skeletal muscle Oxygen Content measured by NIRS can replaces the supervision of gas metabolism, to evaluates Aerobic Capacity of skeletal muscles.
