The comprehensive development of man is often a new as well as a very old topic. The ideologists and philosophers in different times have made persistent examinations and explorations in it. Marx established the theory on the comprehensive development of man over a hundred years ago. Compared with the historical backgrounds where Marx lived, great changes have taken place in the time and practice today, which makes people into deep thought: Does the Marxist thought on the comprehensive development of man still enjoys the value and guidance in the social practice today? How to bring it into a role of guiding? Is it possible to pursue the comprehensive development of man in the present stage? How to promote the comprehensive development of man in higher education? Therefore, how to tap and arrange and study the Marxist thought on the comprehensive development of man completely and systematically, and how to further comprehend and grasp some important ideas and current value in the theory is a requirement not only in replying to the new questions occurring currently but also in the practice of the current time. This paper makes a deep theoretical exploration in the ideas of the Marxist comprehensive development of man and its educational philosophy, elaborates the viewpoints in the Marxist "comprehensive development of man" and explains the basic implication and the realizing conditions of the comprehensive development of man from different views, which lays a theoretical foundation for solving the problem of the comprehensive development of in higher education. On the basis of the Marxist theory of the comprehensive development of man, the status of China's higher education is examined from the factual view, and the position and function of the comprehensive development of man in higher education is studied by combination of the theory with practice. The paper then points out that the comprehensive development of man is the ultimate object of higher education, i.e. it exposes what kind of man higher education shall cultivate after all; and in the end, it puts forward the counter-measures in comprehensively developing the man in higher education.
