The independent study is one kind of modern study theory on the basis of Humanism. The overseas research on this field has already taken the substantial achievements, and has brought profound influence to the education in school. In recent years, much attention has been paid on independent study in the domestic education field and this theory has been included officially in the new curriculum standard.The work in this thesis can be summarized as the following. First, the literature summarization; second, the theoretically basis of independent study; third, the teaching strategies about independent study; fourth, the application of independent study in chemistry teaching in junior middle school and the fifth, the conclusions and reconsideration.In the first part, I mainly talk about independent study from the points of meanings, characteristics and the research condition home and abroad. Zimmerma's research frames about independent study and Winner and Boteler's independent study models are the main contents of overseas research introduction. Furthermore, several representative guidance methods in independent study are introduced in the domestic research introduction. In the second part, on the basis of the introduction of independent study theories, I focus on the general process and influencing factors of independent study, which is the foundation of teaching strategy about independent study that is discussed in the next part. In the third part, I emphasize three teaching strategies: (1) the guidance of students to cultivate good study habits and therefore make solid foundation for independent study; (2) the guidance of students to study independently from the point of cognition; (3) the guidance of students to study independently from the point of study methods. In the fourth part, I talk about the application of these strategies in practical teaching and have got some achievements. At last, I make a simple explanation of the innovations and drawbacks of this research in the fifth part. The main innovation in this paper is that I inspired from Zimmerman, a professor from Washington, whose research on framework of independent study gives me much help. I discussed the factors as learning content, methods, motivation, self-learning environment, and I applied the methods in practice, and have already achieved good results. The main limitation of the system is subject to the impact of class instruction, it is difficult to students to set the goal of self-learning, and evaluate the results.
