A Study About How The Mate-selection Preferences Affect The Marital Quality

The marriage system is the first social system throughout history, which has made tremendous contributions for human multiplication and social development. But, along with the development of times, the marriage system has actually received more and more intense challenges, such as the Western country divorce rate stays at a high level and the developing country divorce rate rises with steady steps. They all have aroused the world's concern. In view of this, more and more people start to ponder the reason, including how to select a mate. Selecting a mate is an essential action before the marriage, which is not only the premise in establishing a family, and is an important factor concerning to the marital quality. Careless and imprudent mate-selection often lays hidden dangers and leads to an unhappy and instable marriage. Therefore, probing the research object's mate-selection preferences and their present marital quality is helpful in revealing the former's influences on the latter.Taking the Changsha's married as our research object, carrying out the theoretical perspective of sociological theories, collecting the materials by the method of the questionnaire investigation and documents, using a research method combined by qualitative and quantitative measures, this paper first probes and describes the married's mate-selection criterions and their marital quality, then, uses the regression method to discuss the relationship between them.After describing all the research object's mate-selection criterion, the paper carries on a contrastive analysis based on historical periods of years and the sex, attempting to find the differences between groups, then describes their present marital quality and constructs multiple regression model. Selecting 15 items of criterions of mate-selection as the independent variable, 6 aspects of the marital quality as the dependent variable, the paper reveals the relationship between two parts.The artical uses SPSS11.5 to deal with the data and establishes the corresponding database. In the light of the results, the author finds the psychological conditions make a most remarkable impact on the marital quality.The second factor are political and economic conditions; the physical conditions have a least impact on the marital quality. Finally, on the basis of summarizing, the author puts forward a reasonable mate-selection system.
