English teaching in primary schools in China developed positive in the situation of the new curriculum reform. But there are also many problems need to be explored and to be solved, such as curriculum standards, the building of the contingent of teachers, teaching materials, teaching methods, the quality of English teaching at all levels in the whole country, the convergence problem between the primary and junior high school and etc.History and reality are interdependent and mutually infiltration. In order to solve the above problems, it's very necessary to study and understand the history of the primary English teaching in China. Historical experience and lessons will help us make reasonable conclusion from a historical perspective.According to this paper, we'll clearly understand the history of the development of English teaching in primary schools in China. And we'll analysis its advantages and disadvantages from linguistics, education, psychology and social factors.Then we can explore suitable teaching methods for primary English education in China.There are five parts in this paper .They are introduction, main body, conclusion, reference books and postscript. There are seven chapters in the main body which are arranged according to the different periods of the development of English-teaching in primary school in China. The first six chapters discribes the backgrounds of English-teaching, the basic situation of English-teaching, the features of English-teaching and the advantages and shortcoming. In the senenth chapter the author prospects the future of English-teaching in primary-school in China.In Chapter One, The beginning of English-teaching in primary school in China. It starts by the missionaries from the western countries. It was only taught narrowly in church schools in the trade harbors, not so many schools, just a few.In Chapter Two, the English-teaching from the late of the nineteenth century to the early of the twentieth century in primary school in China. The development of church schools encouraged legal setting-up of English-teaching in the system of Gui-mao. The English textbooks are original from the western countries. The students are basically in the neighborhood around the trade harbors.In Chapter Three, the English-teaching in primary school during Republic of China. The teaching system of Ren-zi Gui-chou set the importance of English in primary school. English was taught in most primary schools especially in the coastal regions. The teachers mostly used Grammar Translation Method, cultivated the students' English reading skills. English-teaching developed slowly in limited areas.In Chapter Four, the English-teaching from 1949 to the Great Cultural Revolution in primary schools. English was arranged into classes as one of the regular subjects in primary schools by the government. Many foreign language schools were set up and the Direct Method was introduced. The teachers use useful teaching skills to improve the students' spoken English and communicated skills. Primary English teaching developed. But English textbooks need to be improved.In Chapter Five, the English-teaching from 1978 to 2000. English-teaching in primary school developed into a high level both in teaching scale and in teaching quality after some ups-and-downs. People regard English as one of the necessary subjects in primary schools. Communicative Language Teaching became popular in the 90s. But there were differences in different areas. Many places need to be guided in teaching methods.In Chapter Six, English-teaching in primary schools at present. The government issued the new curriculum standard. It revoluted the English-teaching contents, the English teachers, the English textbooks and English teaching-research. The main task is to cultivate students' communicate skills through English-teaching. The English-teaching in primary school develops fast and steadily. There are also some problems to be solved in the same time.In Chapter Seven, the author prospects the English-teaching in primary schools in China will develop from single-subject teaching to multi-subject teaching much faster and prosperously. Teaching ways will be eclectic, compromise. The teaching research body contents will from the object to the subject. Teacher development contents more extensive . The difference between different areas will become smaller and smaller. Education will be fair in most places in China.
