This thesis is a study of the theories and practice of outside reading of Chinese in middle schools, based on the new curriculum reform using the way of documents researching, classroom experimenting, questionnaire surveying, and so on. The author analyzes the present situation and the reasons for it, according to the students'psychology development to get the meaning of the present outside reading.Thorough reforms which along with the new curriculum, takes the outside reading, the class in with the extracurricular communication, more and more receives the language and even the entire society's approval and the attention.The middle-school student outside reading was in the language teaching topic meaning, the national Ministry of Education formulates "the Full-time Compulsory education Language Curriculum Standard in July, 2001 (Experimental Manuscript)" outside the antithesis to read proposed the new duty and the request, regarded the outside reading for the language reading teaching important organic constituent.The thesis first briefly elaborated the strategy of the new curriculum educational reform and the characteristics of the outside reading, showing the close relation between the new curriculum reform and the outside reading. Then by analyzing the questionnaire surveying, the author deals with the present situation of the outside reading in middle schools : students are interested in reading but they are lacking in a good habit of reading; students have read much but the books they have no good taste in reading; students are eager to read but there are not enough books for them to read and there is no good reading atmosphere;students do read but there is no suitable assessment for reading. There are many reasons accounting for this. First, the sense of reading for examinations takes up most of the students'time;second, the backward thoughts of some parents or even teachers hold up students'reading interest; and the present situation prevents students from reading further. Then the author makes the necessity and significance of the outside reading:it is a tool to develop students'latent energy; it is good for students'taste and it is a part of the Chinese teaching. On the basis of this, the author suggests some strategies : first of all, the minds of teachers and parents and it is also important to develop students'reading interest and habit. Besides, there should be more ways for students to read, for example, by multi-media, films, TVs and so on so that students'reading can be aroused. Least but not last, a set of good and suitable assessment should be set to assure the quality of the outside reading in Chinese to avoid the outside reading being unable well, the disorder and invalid.The result of the thesis is presented in the form of a paper. Of course ,it is all-sided because it is only part of the research into the outside reading in Chinese. It is well worth further researching for the outside reading in Chinese is so broad and profound.
