A family is not only the smallest unit of a society, but also the basic unit of social production and social life. This study is from the perspectives of the history of anthropology, and cultural change for the entry point. On the basis of other researchers'achievements about Dayaoshan Yao communities, this study shows the dramatic change of Hualanyao's family in the recent 70 years, thereby tries to demonstrate the great changes of Hualanyao society. The types and functions of Hualanyao family underwent a big change in the past 70 years. As for family types, Hualanyao has gone through a dynamic process from stem family and nuclear family as the main stream to the present situation of varieties, the minority composition within the family also appears to be a trend of diversity. As far as family functions are concerned , a traditional Hualanyao family covers the economic function, reproductive function, education function, sexual life function, children-raising and old man-supporting function etc. But under the impact of modern civilized society, the traditional family function such as feelings of exchange functions and entertainment features are bound to be intensified in some aspects; on the contrary, some other functions such as reproductive function and sexual life function will be inevitably avianized, the trend of change and alienation gradually becomes clear. This paper is divided into five parts. The 1st part is a introduction which includes the purpose, significance, methodology and techniques of the study as well as a brief literature review ; the 2nd part intruduces the basic situation of the fieldwork area ; the 3rd Part discusses the change of Hualanyao family structure and minority composition ; the 4th part analyses the change of Hualanyao family function; the last Part is a summary of the paper.
