Civic awareness education is a spiritual force to promote the constant development of the society. It decides the necessity and urgency for the civic awareness education that the historic mission that college students take on, the international and domestic situation they face, and their own situation they are.The paper emphasizes systematic analysis and integrates theory with practice. In theoretical perspective, jumping out of the narrow framework of civic awareness education within the university, the author focuses on the civic awareness education of Chinese contemporary college students in the whole society, and tries hard to explore a civic mindedness education system in a more comprehensive sense, appropriating for the status of contemporary college students. Specifically, the main parts of the paper are as the followings:Introduction is briefly about the origins and the significance for this topic, as well as the recent academic research situation at home and abroad.The first part clarifies the basic concepts. Citizen is a particular membership in a specific society and country, whose principles to deal with things rely on particular social contract. They naturally have the civil rights and undertake the corresponding obligations with full subjectivity and independency. Civic awareness is a thinking way, in which the subjects (citizens) integrate the states of the awareness with practice for the self and others, as well as public space under the socialist market economy and democratic political system, and on which a behavior way depends. Civic awareness of Chinese contemporary college students is a form how the university students groups reflect and understand about the entity or phenomenon of "citizens", including the inner experience, such as emotion, cognition, rationality, evaluation and belief of "citizens". A complex system of civic awareness education can be built around the category of civic awareness of contemporary college students. The second part expounds the significance of study on Chinese contemporary college students' civic awareness education, which is beneficial to building a harmonious socialist society, beneficial to self-realization and formation of healthy personality of college students.The third part analyzes the objective and content of Chinese contemporary college students' civic awareness education. The goal is to train students into a qualified socialist citizens, to enhance overall quality of our contemporary college students, so as to make them social morality awareness keeping pace with the time, a positive political attitude towards participating in public affairs, a behavior method to fit for the modern democratic politics, and transfer the potential citizens into reality ones, who can play an effective role in society and adapt to social, political and economic development better. Correspondingly, the contents should include: subject, social morality and participation awareness education.The fourth part discusses the principles of civic awareness education of Chinese contemporary college students. It should adopt directional, systematic, subjective and practical principles which are based on the situation of social development and the requirements of the citizens' quality.The fifth part comes up with the ways and means of civic awareness education of Chinese contemporary college students, based on the principles in part four. That is, to educate students by classroom teaching as a main channel to improve the theoretical knowledge of civic education; to guide them by an extra-curricular activities as an effective carrier to impact on civic awareness; to train them by social practice as an external means to exercise abilities; to attract them by network space as a new platform.
