With the objectives of implementing Strategy of Science and Education Making the Nation Prosperous and establishing an innovative nation, universities should take the responsibility to educate high-level innovative persons with abilities. In the purpose of developing undergraduates'innovative and research ability, the creation and application of the inquiry teaching in the education of undergraduate course has met the requirements of our society towards people. My research focuses on the theories and practice of the Inquiry Teaching in Undergraduate Education.First, I have reviewed the origin of the Inquiry Teaching from the history of Western and Chinese educational ideology. Then, I have analyzed the essence of the ideology of the modern Inquiry Teaching, and have made some complements and further illustrations by elaborating on the philosophical,psychological and pedagogical bases of Inquiry Teaching.With the help of these efforts, I have carefully thought over the theories and practice of Inquiry Teaching in Undergraduate Education. I have analyzed the differences between Inquiry Teaching and Traditional Teaching in the aspects of teaching theory,teaching methods and the relationship between teachers and students. In addition, I have compared and contrasted Inquiry Teaching in Undergraduate Education with that in Elementary and Secondary Education from the five aspects of teaching styles,teaching objectives,teaching contents,teaching subjects and teaching effects, and further made clear the basic features of Inquiry Teaching in Undergraduate Education. In the following step, I have researched the three principal styles and four principal means of Inquiry Teaching in the universities at present.Finally, I cited the example of the practice of teaching reform by Professor Jiang Jianjun from Department of Electronic Science and Technology, HUST. Basing on the brief descriptions of his implementation of Inquiry Teaching in Undergraduate Education, I have analyzed the implementation and the evaluating format of the Inquiry Teaching by the Department of Electronic Science and Technology, as well as the effect of developing undergraduates'innovation. Next, I have discussed the functional system that ensures the implementation of Inquiry Teaching. Moreover, I have pointed out the challenges that will face the teachers brought forth by the implementation of Inquiry Teaching in Undergraduate Education and some countermeasures to these challenges.
