As one of the major components in the nation's traditional culture as well as in senior high school history curriculum, folk-custom education has been receiving increasing attention in recent years. This thesis gives a brief introduction to the concept and types of folk-custom and discusses, by means of comparison and analysis of the status of folk-custom education in various high schools at home and abroad, the necessity of incorporating folk-custom education into history curriculum in three aspects, namely the general trend of historical studies, the requirements for the reform of high school history curriculum as well as the needs for mental and physical development of students.The thesis also makes an in-depth investigation into the pedagogical practice in folk-custom education. It demonstrates the important role folk-custom education plays in high school history curriculum by analyzing the folklore content in three different editions of high school history textbooks including the national and Shanghai editions as well as by studying the teaching plans and methodologies in three types of lessons namely foundation-laying lessons, extension-type lessons and research-oriented lessons. At the end of the thesis, the writer proposes her own viewpoint on the moderation and selectivity of penetrating folk-custom education into history curriculum.Incorporating folk-custom education into history curriculum will enable the students to learn and understand better the national culture from different perspectives and therefore is one of the effective ways of enhancing the national consciousness of the students.
