The Cultivation Of Citizen Awareness On Modern College Students

Civic Awareness is a modern awareness which came into being with the definition of"Citizen". This awareness is formed in the light of modem rule of law and is the citizens'self-consciousness of their political status and legal status. The citizens'awareness covers individual subject awareness, active awareness of law, self-conscious awareness of carrying out their rights, rational and legal awareness of democratic equality, social ethic awareness with modern an tradition qualities and international awareness, among which the awareness of the rights and duties are always displayed.Civic Awareness is a significant symbol of the development of social civilization. Cultivating civic awareness is an important issue of the socialism spiritual civilization construction. In our country, we have defined"citizens", but due to the influence by history and reality, citizens don't have the modern civic awareness with the awareness of the rights and duties as cores. And the shortage of civic awareness has been an obstacle in the process of our country's modernization. With transition from a centrally planned economy toward a market based economy in China, civic awareness and legal awareness are absolutely needed, which are fundamental demand of modern civic awareness. As a nucleus force of the socialist modernization of China, contemporary university students should be not only specialized professionals with modern scientific knowledge, but also the qualified citizens with modern awareness. With respect to university students'weak civic awareness, strengthening the cultivation and education of students'civic awareness is of great significance to improve university students'overall qualities and propel our socialism spiritual civilization construction and carry out our goal of founding a country under the rule of law.This thesis intends to survey university students civic awareness, discovers the main problems of their civic awareness. The problems are displayed as weak subject awareness, weak legal awareness, less awareness of right, indifference in democratic equality, shortage of social responsibility and social ethic awareness. The reasons for their weak civic awareness come from society and university students themselves, among which our imperfection of social law cultural environment, negative influence of market economy, and the inadequacy of education in universities are the leading reasons. Strengthening the education of university students'awareness is a long and systematic project, which needs the combined efforts from schools, society and families. Educators should improve legal education and fully display the function and privilege in teaching law and increase university students'legal awareness; educators should encourage participate the practice of defending their rights and intensify the practical teaching; and the education of their civic awareness should be carried on with daily life and educators should help university students recognize the relationship between human and society, actively shoulder social responsibility; educators should focus on the courses of Marxism and Ideological and Political Education in schools and teach them to know the relation between"being an moral person"and"being a useful person". Besides, to strengthen school civic cultural construction, set up a teaching staff with high qualities and build a good environment of civic education are the keys to cultivating university students'civic awareness.
