We must always think about three questions on high education. First, What kind of people have been trained in the university? Secondly, Why kind of people have been trained in the university? The third is whether or talents suitable for the development of society.Evolution of educational goals in modern university education and the causes behind this evolution is the main theme of this paper. As a result, ideas of this paper will be showed as the following. Inspect evolution of educational goals especially from ancient to modern connotations, then discover ancient university education experienced a "humanistic stage". Character of this historical period is attention of humanities and neglect of science.Under the impact of Western science, modern university education complete change from attention of humanities to attention of science and neglect of humanities. This misunderstanding leaves us valuable experience and regret.Choose educational goals as the point in this paper, and make theoretical exploration about characteristics and evolution of educational goals under the background of China's modernization of higher Education in order to grasp the law of evolution and provide historical reference about how to train people. In this sense, at first inspect imperial examination system and its shortcoming since the Ming and Qing Dynasty. From the nearest institution of higher education in ancient China—Shu Yuan and the contents of educational goals that the representatives can understand in modern age, analyze the Chinese traditional and cultural connotation and denotation. Secondly, among the compilation of educational data in modern China, choose relevant data to analyze and discuss, such as data of Peking University, data of Tsinghua University.We hope that we can sort out the law of evolution of educational goals from more complicated history of higher education. Give experience to modern people about contemporary university education.Finally, draw briefly conclusions and inspiration in the paper. Historical background and representatives'practice at the university are the fundamental reason. The people's understanding is the root cause leading to declination and marginalization of Chinese Learning but the people understanding, educational institutions and educating practice are mutually intertwined. It is beneficial and necessary to emphasize traditional prominent culture that promotes higher education.Modern university education without high-end scientific and technical personnel can not support and promote the development of modern society. Education should be a warning for contemporary practice.
