Physical education is an important part of school education. It is a key link to implement quality-oriented education. Along with the in-depth development of the physical education reformation, especially the impact from the quality-oriented education, there are many unprecedented opportunities and challenges to physical education. So it's high time to innovate our teaching method.Table tennis is a key sport, and it's also China's national sport. Table tennis is very popular with college students, for its characters such as fitness, practice, interest etc. Although it is a highly technical sport, table tennis, as an elective class, is taught by traditional teaching method organized by class unit, in most colleges. This method is too simple and boring, from the view of organizing and teaching, so it's hard to meet the modern physical education goals and the principles of individualized instruction. 'Graded teaching' method is a new creative teaching method that comes from quality-oriented education implementation. Under this teaching method, students are divided into different levels according to their physical quality and movement ability, and served with corresponding instructional objectives, requirements, contents, methods and evaluation individually, in order to make each student fully develop their specialties and abilities. It's the quality-oriented education that gives us the responsibilities and missions.The author undertook detailed investigation and studies on the students' elective courses in Wuhan University Institute of Water Resource and Hydropower. Many techniques such as survey method, expert conversation method, document method, experimentation method, statistics method and logical argumentation method are applied to the investigation and studies. And we experimentally introduced graded teaching method to students' elective courses. The studies show that 'graded teaching' method has a stronger pertinence character, which can develop students' learning interest and self exercise ability, stimulate students' learning motivation, and arouse learning enthusiasm and creativity. This teaching method aims to promote students' personality, and emphasis students' activity, in order to develop students' knowledge, skills, intelligence and ability in different levels. It also can improve students' comprehensive quality to meet the requirements of modern quality-oriented education. In addition, 'graded teaching' method can help students develop their definite learning goals and hobbies through identifying students' learning motivation. And this method can help students find out their study orientation early by organizing students to make preliminary career plans. Therefore this method can stimulate students' self motivation, which can help teachers organize teaching activities efficiently. This teaching mode optimizes class structure, which provides a basis of enhancing teaching quality and efficiency of table tennis class. Meanwhile, 'graded teaching' method can help students and their parents overcome unreasonable psychology, and can make a good foundation for students' sense of sports in their whole life. Nothing is better than the appropriate.
