As an indispensable teaching process in higher education, Physical Education (PE) plays a very important role in cultivating people's sense of scientific and nutritious health care, helping them gain both physical and psychological well-being, fostering the habit of physical exercise and favorable characteristics and enhancing the consciousness of physical ability. In recent years, with the continuous development of teaching theories of modern PE and the in-depth reform of PE teaching, some traditional teaching theories, thoughts, modes, and methods of PE is witnessing great impact. Therefore, during the process of transferring examination-oriented education to all-round-development-oriented education, how to enhance the quality of PE teaching is desperate for proper leading ideas and constructing new teaching mode. Through research and analysis of many PE teaching modes, the writer found that, at present, the PE teaching modes at universities in China present a diversified feature, but the relative relationship between teachers, textbooks and students has not yet been broken through and the self-determination and flexibility of students'choices has not in its full play. In addition, the writer discovered that individual education can not stand out; the ascertainment of students'principal position in PE education is still not adequate; the assessment of students'physical ability is not scientific and reasonable enough; the PE resources of universities has not exerted greater benefit. Consequently, according to this situation and relatively lag phenomena of PE teaching at universities, the writer advocated the"structure-directed"teaching mode. The methodologies applied in this thesis are literature review, questionnaires, expert-interview, symbolic statistic, teaching experiment and logic analysis. The undergraduates of grade 2006 from two volleyball classes as electives at Northeast Normal University in Changchun were selected as the subjects and the teaching experiment proceeded for a semester of 36 periods. During the teaching process, the writer made a comparative research between one volleyball class adopting"structure-directed"teaching mode and the other adopting class-teaching mode. Through the analysis of the physical performance, volleyball techniques and theoretical scores of the students from those two classes, the writer found that the unitary performance of the former class which adopted the"structure-directed"teaching mode is much better than the latter, and the differences are quite obvious. The same problem was found through the investigation of the status of students'PE cognition and common sense, active exercise, communication with others and mutual help and study. The teaching experiment carried out by the writer proved that the"structure-directed"teaching mode was efficient and suitable for volleyball teaching at universities. However, the"structure-directed"teaching mode still stands in a tentative stage at the ordinary elective teaching of communal volleyball class at universities. It requires further improvement and enhancement in many perspectives. Therefore, the writer confirmed this teaching mode, and at the same time, also provided some suggestions of its application, aiming to promote the mode and offer some enlightenment to perfect the teaching system of volleyball.
