Higher education in British India had gone through many stages of development for almost two hundred years. The thesis describes the development of higher education from 1757 to 1947 focusing on different education policies and implementations during the main phases, with a view to find the origin and foundation in the post-independence India.The thesis consists of six parts.Part one introduces the development of India's higher education under the influence of East India Company.Part two discusses the colonial government improved the practice of education in India to adapt to its new colonial policy, by transplanting the modern educational system from England.Part three introduces a series of reforms in the field of education by the colonial government to consolidate the rule, and expounds the progress of policy adjustments and limitations on this stage.Part four discusses the implementation and the adjustment of the colonial policies in the rise of the Indian national movement.Part five discusses the pre-independence India to choose their own path of development, as well as the British rulers to promote a series of education reforms.Part six briefly summarizes the influence of higher education in British India on the development of independent India, and British education policy in Africa.
