Math language is the vehicle of math thought and the scientific language for expressing math thought. The comprehension of math language is a state where learners can conduct activities like identifying, understanding, transforming, constructing, organizing and expressing when acquiring and applying math language. The current situation of math language teaching at secondary vocational school in our country is not satisfactory. The students often cannot fully understand and apply math knowledge due to math language obstacles. It is related to comprehension difficulty generated in the process of math learning. This essay tried to study the formation of comprehension difficulty for vocational school students and the teaching strategies for overcoming it, intending to provide some guidance to improve their learning for math comprehension, and making suggestions for improving math teaching and course reform.Through survey method, this essay analyzed the vocational school students'problems in math language comprehension and major factors affecting their math language comprehension, and under the guidance of math education science and math psychology, conducted empirical research and put forward relevant teaching strategies for their math language comprehension.This essay is based on the theory of cognitive structure, Piaget's cognitive development theory, and related research results about comprehension in general and math comprehension in particular. It analyzed the connotation of comprehension in philosophy, psychology and pedagogy, and the types of comprehension, and defined math language comprehension from the angles of teaching and learning on the basis of the study of its connotation, model and layer. Analyzing the current study of math comprehension, it conducted its individual recognition, pointed out a few problems for further study, and discussed the meaning of comprehension difficulty in math language.Based on theoretical research, the author made an investigation in a few classes of our school and conducted testing. According to the investigation, the essay analyzed several causes for the students'comprehension difficulty as follows:1. For students: comprehension difficulties caused by irrationally mistaken concepts in their minds; by wrong images affected by daily language; by negative impact of their thinking pattern; and by the limitation of their recognition2. For teachers: comprehension difficulties caused by their improper use of language; and by some improper steps in the course of teaching3. For math language itself and contents of teaching materials: comprehension difficulties caused by the characteristic of math language itself and the abstractness of math knowledge in teaching materialsIn math language teaching, the following principles should be abided by: Emphasis should be put on actual effect as well as accuracy; concreteness as well as abstractness; developmentalness as well as systematicality; actual application as well as theory; and being interesting as well as analogical and enlightening.Thereon, this essay suggests the following strategies:1. Use specific methods to deal with the students;2. Put stress on guiding the students in the process of math language comprehension;3. Reveal the nature of math by analogy; and4. Equip the students with the ability to express by using math language, and enforce their consciousness of participating in classroom teaching .
