A Comparative Study Of Sino-US College Students Voluntary Service

Since the 1970s, volunteer organizations had risen and developed in a global scale. It gradually becomes an active force for the development of modern society which set off a wave of voluntary service all over the world. The issue of voluntary service has increasingly become the focus of theoretical research in Academic Community at home and abroad.When time goes to the 21st century, voluntary service has become an important indicator to measure the level of civilization of countries and regions. The size and number of organizations is growing continuously which play a series of unique and important function in the economic, political, social, cultural and other fields. Volunteer organizations are a booming cause both in contemporary China and other countries. The birth of the reform and opening brings about the volunteer organizations with Chinese characteristics. After years of development, as the main participation force the college students' volunteer played an important role in voluntary service. The students have a high ideological consciousness and enthusiastic in public welfare, they take use of their spare time and professional knowledge to provide free service for people and society. The voluntary service has become a new and important means for ideological and political education in colleges. But compared with the United States and other Western developed countries, China's college volunteer service is still at a developing stage. The relevant theoretical research has yet to be explored in further discussion. The purpose of this paper is to find out the similarities and differences through a systematic comparative study between China and the United States in voluntary service, combined with our current shortcomings and omissions, digging the significance for Chinese volunteer service. Finally this paper raised a number constructive ways to promote our service to a new level under the new situation.In this paper, four parts are included in addition to the Introduction and Conclusion:In The first part, it mainly introduced the general situation of college students' voluntary service, including the development clues and four basic characteristics. And it elaborates the important significance of China's college students' voluntary service from the point of view university students, university and society.In the second part, it t mainly introduced the general situation of the United States college students' voluntary service, including four development phases, four basic characteristics. And it cleared the important role of college students' voluntary service from student, university and society. In the third part, it introduced the similarities and differences between China and the United States college students' volunteer service from the values, forms of organization, service, assessment mechanisms and support system.In the forth part, it mainly introduced the enlightenment for China's college students' voluntary service based on the similarities and differences between China and the United States. At last, it proposed some references and suggestions for how to promote and advance our voluntary service from the innovative concept, the support of state and society, the improvement of mechanisms, the strengthen of the main force of university students.
