With the traditional approach of teaching writing, Chinese teachers usually make assessments promptly when students finish their compositions. Actually, there is no real communication among teachers, parents and students. Students seldom share their experience of writing a composition with each other, making writing merely a monologue.The hypothesis of teaching writing in a communicative way is based on modern educational theories, inspired by the ideas and conceptions of curriculum reform. And it lays stress on the combination of theory and practice, joins methods of research through investigation, research into documents, and research of activities together and uses the achievements in theory studies and the experience of the reform of teaching writing in primary schools as a source of reference.It brings in "communication" to the research and practice of teaching writing in primary schools, attempting to find a different approach for another breakthrough of teaching writing in primary schools through experimenting a communicative teaching approach to writing.This is elaborated in the following five parts.In the first part, the author points out the significance and the necessities of the research. And the second part investigates and analyzes the current situation of teaching writing in primary schools.The third part deals with the contents and characteristics of communicative approach to teaching writing and points out the basic theories of it, namely constructivism's theory of learning, collective dynamical theory, conceptions of education for all-round development and theory of interaction for education.The fourth part explains the five steps of communicative approach of teaching writing—stimulating the motivation of communication, creating the situation for communication, construct the platform for communication, writing while communicating, making assessments through communicating. And the fifth part presents some of the achievements and the author's reflection on it.In short, the communicative approach of teaching writing is one thatrespects the subjectivity of students, shows the creativity of students, teachers and parents, and is aimed at the humanization of teaching. And the greatest merit of this approach is that it can give play to students' subjectivity to the fullest, meet as many needs of the students as possible and aggregate the most wisdom of students.
