Jing Hengyi(1877—1938), as a famous democratic educationist and a pioneer of secondary education in neoteric Chinese history, he has devoted his whole life to the cause of education. He has indicated that the initiatives of school education should be the personality education and authentic education. At that time, carried out with his personality education ideology, Zhejiang First Normal College and Chunhui Private Secondary School of Shangyu have won a high reputation throughout China.Jing Hengyi's personality education ideology has originated from his experience of overseas study and rich educational practice as well as his reflection on the history and reality of education. He has appreciated the personality education theory based on the western neo-idealism, so he has developed his educational thought by combining advanced educational theories both at home and abroad with Chinese reality.This thesis is composed of four parts: The first is mainly about the historic background of Jing Hengyi's personality education ideology and the exploration of the essence of education by the intellectuals who have believed that education could save the country. In the second part the author tries to illustrate the aim of Jing Hengyi's personality education ideology by analyzing his articles. Then in the third part the author points out the specific connotation and claims of Jing Hengyi's personality education ideology by further analyzing his articles. As in the fourth part the author probes into the successful experience and failure reason of Jing Hengyi's personality education ideology by analyzing his practice in Chunhui high school. At last the author discusses the importance of Jing Hengyi's theory which emphasizes the planting of human being's rational spirit and the necessities of enlightening today's rational personality.
